Depression, Burnout & Trauma Therapy in Colorado

Many people who seek therapy are not overwhelmed by emotion — they feel the opposite.

They describe feeling numb, stuck, exhausted, or unable to start things they know matter to them. Some struggle to get out of bed, follow through on plans, or feel motivated even when they care deeply about their lives and relationships.

This is often not laziness or lack of effort. It is a nervous system that has shifted into a shutdown state after too much stress for too long.

What This Can Look Like

Many clients worry something is wrong with their character, “I’m lazy” or “I am unloveable.” Unlikely. These tend to be protective responses your brain and body developed to cope with stress, trauma, or other situations out of your control. If you are willing to do the work, and trust me- it will be work- you can experience profound changes.

You might notice

• low energy or persistent fatigue
• loss of motivation
• feeling emotionally flat or disconnected
• withdrawing from people you care about
• procrastination that feels impossible to overcome
• knowing what you “should” do but feeling unable to begin
• cycles of guilt and self-criticism

How Therapy Helps

In therapy we do not start with pressure to “push through” or force productivity. Instead we work to understand what your system is responding to and how it learned to shut down.

Sessions focus on gently increasing emotional and behavioral movement without overwhelming you. We work on:

restoring a sense of safety

reconnecting with emotions

reducing avoidance patterns

rebuilding motivation gradually

improving connection with others

As change begins, clients often notice small shifts first — starting tasks more easily, responding instead of withdrawing, and feeling more present in daily life.

What Individual Therapy Sessions Are Like

You do not need to wait until you feel motivated to begin therapy. Many people start exactly when they feel most stuck.

Many people come to therapy worried they will either be pushed too quickly into painful memories or spend sessions talking without anything changing. My approach is paced and collaborative.

We start by understanding what your mind and body have learned to do to protect you. Anxiety, overthinking, emotional shutdown, and people-pleasing are often attempts to manage stress or avoid hurt, even when they no longer work well. Rather than immediately trying to eliminate symptoms, we first make them understandable.

Sessions focus on helping you notice reactions as they happen — the moment your thoughts spiral, your chest tightens, or you go numb or shut down. We slow those experiences down and develop ways to respond differently so you feel more in control rather than overwhelmed by them.

You are never required to talk about anything before you feel ready. At the same time, therapy is not just venting. We actively work on practical skills, emotional awareness, and new patterns you can use in daily life, not only in session.

Many clients begin therapy feeling exhausted from managing everything internally. Over time, they often experience greater calm, clearer thinking, and more choice in how they respond to situations and relationships.

“Alex Hopkins is hands down, the best therapist I’ve ever worked with. She knows exactly how to call me out on my BS in a way that’s honest but still supportive, which keeps me from getting too comfortable or stagnant. She has this incredible ability to help me see things more clearly, even when I don’t want to. I always leave our sessions feeling more grounded and motivated. She challenges me, listens deeply, and genuinely gets where I’m coming from. Working with her has made a real difference in my life.”
